Good bye my dear friend, Jet. You are now resting peacefully. I will miss you terribly as you have been with me since your birth for nearly half of my life. You have left a hole in my heart. But, you have also left me with a lifetime of wonderful memories.
You were a true water dog and was always home at the beach. I remember fondly how this was your favorite place for a run and swim. You sure showed those bad seagulls whose beach it really was! I also remember your other favorite hangout was at the feed shed, keeping those awful mice out. The cats couldn't compare to your extermination skills. You were my first Lab. You gave me a taste of what it was like to win our first champion points from bred-by. A thrill I'll never forget and will never forget that it was you who won those first points.
You aged gracefully and I have fond memories of your National Specialty debut a few years ago. You won a nice big rosette in your age group in Sweeps, but your real job was playing supervisor--making sure that I put up the expens just right and when taking the dogs for potty walks at dusk, you would stay by the pile making sure I came back to clean up and that I knew right where it was. You followed me like a shadow at that show making sure that I did everything right and you were right there making sure I knew you could help me out, should I need it.
For your 13th birthday, we had a dinner picnic at the shoreline together. Though much slower and a bit stiffer, you did your best to chase those bad seagulls away from our space on the beach. I could see in your eyes, as you gazed out over the ocean, that you remembered a different time when you could run and splash in those waves. Things were different now.
Today we shared breakfast together overlooking the beaches you once enjoyed romping over. You could only sit and watch the seagulls as they walked past the car. Then you fell asleep in my arms as you went to the bridge. Rest well, my beloved friend. May your spirit be free now to soar over the ocean.
"You're here, there's nothing I fear, you are safe in my heart and my heart will go on...."
